Club History

Origins

In 1927, the Glebe Presbyterian church was transferred stone by stone from the corner of Glebe Road and Parramatta Road to a site in Bridge Road, Glebe.

About this time, a Scotsman by the name of Sam Matthews, established at Glebe Church, the 1st Sydney Company of the Boys Brigade in Australia, which attracted youth from Presbyterian families in the district and became well established.

A soccer team was then formed to represent the boys brigade and they played in the Protestant Churches Association's competitions.

Birth of the Club

From 1939 to 1945, the Second World War caused the Boys Brigade soccer team to disband until 1946 when the remnants of the original boys brigade side, which was still based at Wentworth Park Glebe, met and formed an "Old Boys Club".

The first and main interest was to establish a soccer team and thus in 1946 was born, Glebe Wanderers Soccer Club. As most players were newly arrived immigrants or returning servicemen, it was felt "Wanderers" was an appropriate name for the club, and this name has remained ever since.

The Glebe Wanderers joined the Metropolitan Soccer League in 1946 under NSW Soccer Association and enjoyed many successful years competing in what later became known as the Sydney Amateur Soccer League until 1991-1992.

1992 - Present Day

From 1992-1998, Glebe competed in the NSW State League, starting in the 6th Division and becoming Champions in the first season. A further 3 championships would follow, including back to back titles in 1994 and 1995, culminating the 3rd Division title in 1997. A further year in the state league structure saw the club finish fifth in the league, but the club was being drawn to an increasingly competitive Eastern Suburbs competition.

For the last 20 years, Glebe Wanderers have been competing at many levels within the Eastern Suburbs Football Association.

During this time, most of the club members have been centred around the Eastern Suburbs and this remains the case today, with a diverse range of nationalities represented through the club.
